The 2016 Extreme Sailing Series has come to a close and the last race of the series was held in Sydney. The Swiss team Alinghi won the 2016 Extreme Sailing series and thereby have now won the Extreme Sailing series three times. Their first series victory was in 2008 and after that, they had won the sailing series in 2014.
The last race of the series was a hard fought and close finish race that went to the wire. The Oman Air team gave a tough fight to the Swiss team. Alinghi has won the Extreme Sailing series 2016 championship on the new GC32 catamarans, sailing th final leg into Split
The Sydney harbor waters saw an excellent series this season and it was befitting that this was the venue for the final races of the series. Oman Air started the eighth and the last race of the 2016 season with a 2 point overall lead. Alinghi had to just beat the Oman Air crew to claim the 2016 Series title. Alinghi had a cushion of about 19 points on Morgan Larson’s Oman Air at the start of the final day’s race. The Sydney Harbor skies were ready to welcome the contestants with blue skies and winds of 13 to 20 knots.
Alinghi had a wobble in the afternoon and this gave Larson’s team some hope. But, despite their valiant efforts to get past the Swiss team, the Swiss crew was ready for the task and every trick that Larson and his team could throw at them. The season victory for Alinghi was only confirmed in the penultimate race of the Act and was in fighting place ahead of Oman Air’s team in the fifth position.
The Alinghi helmsman Psaroudakis said that the team is happy and relieved to have gotten off the scare from the Oman Air crew and to win the Sailing series champion’s title for 2016.
